UGA Professor Not Indicted on Terroristic Threat During School Mtg

Back in August of 2007, University of Georgia mathematics professor Shuzhou Wang was charged with making terroristic threats at Cedar Shoals High School during a parent-teacher conference for one of his children; Wang is the father of two autistic children. As reported in the Athens Banner-Herald, a grand jury did not indict Wang, noting that he did not intend to terrorize anyone:

At least one school official felt threatened by his remarks, according to the indictment prosecutors presented.

Wang “did threaten to commit a crime of violence with the purpose of terrorizing (the official) by threatening to kill people in the county,” the court document states.

The professor and his wife struggle to raise two children with autism, and he was frustrated during the meeting and said things he regretted, according to Wang’s attorney, David Crowe.
“He was trying to nail down their curriculums, to make sure they get what they needed,” Crowe said.

Grand jurors apparently agreed Wang didn’t intend to terrorize anyone with the alleged threats, the attorney said.

“Of course, I can’t really speak for the grand jury, but what Dr. Wang said, in fact, didn’t frighten anybody,” the attorney said.

The conference was tape-recorded, and Crowe said when he listened to the tape, he didn’t hear anyone say they felt threatened by Wang.

The Athens Banner-Herald also notes that Wang was frustrated by “five unfounded reports of possible abuse school officials made within the previous year to the Clarke County Department of Family and Children Services.”

It’s a stark and difficult example of the (understatement) strained relationships that can exist between parents and special educators.

Ugg, that’s never happened to us but we have friends who had other parents at a daycare phone in abuse accusations. :/ Mom was totally blindsided when the social worker phoned up to meet (and they give no reason when arranging the meeting apparently). The social worker started out very serious and uptight but turned pretty quickly though in the meeting when talking to her. After about 10 minutes worker spontaneously said “does your son have a diagnosis”? In the end good things came out of it, the parents had been struggling to get their son in for his diagnosis because they knew something was up. The social worker helped get that fasttracked.

P.S. In a separate incident they also had a teacher in a [private] special needs school make an “anonymous” accusation of abuse. It was cleared up right away but what a total hassle, I imagine that’s got to feel just so horrible. :/

  2. So, lemme get this straight….

He’s had a parent-teacher conference, in which a frustrated man trying to get proper support for his kid ends up losing it for a few seconds (typical result, probably aimed at by the officials, since it allows them to start making comments and raising issues about fitness to parent, etc!), and they want to press charges of terrorism against him? And Grand Jury can see nothing threatening in all this (at least, on the level of bloody terrorism)?

“At least one school official felt threatened by his remarks, according to the indictment prosecutors presented.”

At least one school official should lose their fucking job, in my very unhumble opinion.

Because – you know what’s wrong with school systems the world over?

    School officials.

And this example here shows such an idiot crying ‘terrorist’ when a frustrated parent who’s had little success with this pillock and his/her fucking cronies in the past finally (as probably intended by the said pillock and/or said fucking cronies) cracks under the pressure of increasing stonewalling from those in the school system.

To school officials everywhere: the only time you’ll encounter a ‘terrorist’ in meetings in which you are present is when you choose to create them. So, STOP IT!

How can you tell a school official is lying?
    Their lips move.
