Uh-Oh. Blackle Does Not Help Save Energy?

I have been pretty much of a Blackle convert after I learned about it. I mean, yes, I can help save more energy and I also have come to love the black background.

But I did chance upon this post:

In January 2007, Mark Ontkush, the owner of the ecoIron blog, suggested that a large amount of energy could be saved if Google switched their home page from white to black. The initial savings was estimated to be 3000 Megawatt-hours a year; this was later rounded down to 750 Megawatt-hours, after an error in the calculations was found. At the time, ecoIron was receiving about 100 hits per day. The story was posted on Digg where it rapidly went to #1 on the main page, ultimately receiving over 4,000 Diggs. Tony Heap, the owner of HeapMedia, started the Blackle site shortly after these events.

So now I’m thinking. Could it really be just a scheme of some sort or is Blackle for real?

Oh well. Anyhow, if you’re up to more Blackle-like sites, you can check these other ones out:

It’s been discussed time and time again, a black search portal offers very little in the way of power saving overall. All this site does is generate revenue for it’s owners which is put to no good use at all.

As an alternative search portal try -

    http://www.regrowgle.com

Any profits from using this portal are actually put back into environmental projects to cancel out a portion of energy etc that is consumed.

Hey it’s a start, and every little bit counts in my opinion

There is also the Carbon Neutral Search Engine it uses Google Custom Search but offsets a minimum of 100g of CO2 per search, saving energy and the environment

I prefer using Darkoogle http://www.darkoogle.com another black Google and is available in over 40 countries http://www.darkoogle.com/international

Best of all its got the ’similar page’ option in the result page like the normal white Google. I use that a lot.
