Unearthing Fossils

I listened with interest to the news story on the radio about the giant penguin fossils found recently in Peru. Of course my mind swung immediately to journal writing. I couldn’t help thinking that some of my old journal entries might be considered fossils.
I pulled out one of my very first journals and read several pages. Sure enough I found the long dead bones of some of my early ideas and aspirations. In my recent journal I rewrote the passages that interested me most and breathed life into them to see what they might reveal to me now, this far down the road. I can only say it was more than interesting and highly recommend you do the same by rereading old journal entries, too.
If you’re only new to journal writing revisit a time when you were younger; a memory or moment you feel is somehow significant, yet has come to nothing today. Write this in your journal. Spend some time writing down your feelings about this and reread your entry. Look for statements that look anything like excuses. Highlight these excuses, or reasons, and write further on these at another time or tomorrow.
I hope you find something useful for your journal writing. Please feel free to share in the comments section below.
