Unforgiving on Thanksgiving

Allow me to share the following comment (on my blog entry, “What’s cooking on Thanksgiving?”) I received that didn’t quite put a smile on my face:

Raquel,

I cant say I am surprised to see another simple recipe that you found after a quick search online and haven’t even tried to make yet.

I’m sorry and I don’t mean to be rude but I think that my time reading “Noodles and Rice” as come to an end. The previous author had a unique perspective living in Japan and posting unique and interesting foods/recipes/pictures of things that I had never seen or heard of before and most importantly, his writing was INTERESTING.

Now it is just a simple food blog written by someone who doesn’t seem to have a great amount of culinary knowledge. Your site (at least so far) brings absolutely nothing to the table.

Example? You posted a video of how to use chopsticks a few days ago! Anyone could type in “how to use chopsticks” into google and find that. I’m sorry but not up to par…

Regards,

Brendan

Much as I don’t want to make any excuses, truth is, this is my first blogging stint. I’m still new at this, hence I have yet to meet readers’ expectations. And I’m up to the challenge! So, keep those comments and suggestions coming, whether positive or otherwise, as I strive to be a better blogger of Noodles and Rice.

Thanks for the comment, Brendan. Hopefully you’ll come back to visit, and learn that my finds will be up to your standards.

sorry but i think the reason i read this is the unique take on japanese life through the eyes of someone who is western. i am also dissapointed that tom has left.

  2. Raquel says:

Thanks, Nicky. I appreciate your honesty.

I’m a little confuse, I started reading your blog not too long ago. Is this a share blog or something and you took over?

    Raquel,

Yes, it may be true that Tom will be missed and that he had a different point of view that was refreshing; however, it can also be stated (and must be in my humble opinion) that obviously Tom had every bit of trust in your ability to finish what he started! There are a million ‘foodie’ blogs out there that are based upon culinary experience, but in my opinion (again a very humble one) it is not experience that creates a good blogger or ‘foodie’, rather it is PASSION. I for one am eager to see what you bring to the table in both categories, and am willing to watch you grow and learn on your journey. This is mostly due to my innate ability to enjoy cheering for the underdog, but it also has a great deal to do with the fact that I like this site :)

I wish you all the best, Raquel, and I will continue to support this site for what Tom wanted it to be, and you for being gracious enough to carry that torch for him.

    Shari

Hi Ms.__2 be! I took over this blog last month and I’m the sole writer.

  6. Raquel says:

Thank you very much for those kind words, Shari, and for giving me a chance. Tom is definitely one tough act to follow!

  7. Jon says:

I will miss Tom as well, but you are still bookmarked. I have enjoyed yoru recipies, and have high expextations that you will be keeping an interesting blog.

  8. Raquel says:

    Thanks for your support, Jon.

Hello – I found this blog while doing a search for a papri recipe, and decided to browse around while I was here. I just wanted to say that it’s great to see someone responding to criticism so gracefully, and for this reason alone I’ve added you to my reading list. I may not keep you there forever, since I only have limited blog-reading time and there are an awful lot of blogs out there, but this post has convinced me to give you a chance. Thank you!

I didn’t like the old blog so much. His photos were blurry too. I guess to make this blog more interesting is to go out there, explore what you have in your surroundings, blog what you eat etc…take some interesting photos too. People who are criticizing you should just be quiet. At least you’re doing something fun. Keep at it & you’ll improve.

  11. Raquel says:

Thanks, Kake. Hope I keep you glued here =)

  12. Raquel says:

Thanks for the suggestions, Kate. I have my camera with me now every time we eat out. Something I never thought I’d see myself doing, haha!

I will continue to read your blog. Tom was great, but so are you. I appreciate that you bring new and interesting dishes to me, at least.

  14. Christine says:
