Federal officials are expecting the first cases of bird flu to show up in the United Stated in as little as six weeks, most likely in Alaska. A plan is being finalized that Predident Bush should be able to approve within the next two weeks that will provide agencies spell out how they should respond if H5N1 should become transmitable to humans.
In this plan a worst case scenerio of 90 million sick and 2 million fatalities worldwide is assumed. Also, scientists are debating who to vaccinate first, those who are most likely to spread the disease or those who are traditionally first in line for flu shots, such as the elderly, young and chronically ill.
