Military personnel like a soldier who was flung in the air when a grenade went off near him, can sustain head injuries even if they don’t lose consciousness. Unfortunately, many of these injuries go unnoticed and unreported. As the soldiers “shake off” these injuries and continue on with their duties, the damage remains and could end up causing significant harm later on down the road.
According to the MayoClinic.com, people who have had concussions may have twice the risk of developing epilepsy (a seizure disorder) within the first 5 years after the injury. Further concussions also add to the risk of developing neurological complications and there are suggestions that multiple concussions can lead to Parkinson’s disease or Alzheimer’s disease. Multiple concussions can also cause memory loss and other neurological problems.
The New York Times has published an article featuring servicemen who sustained concussions during their tours of duty and the effects they live with now: War Veterans’ Concussions Are Often Overlooked.
