Dr. JP Cartailler emailed me last week about Symphony Medical’s Fibrisyl-AF kit for the prevention of post-operative atrial fibrillation, currently in phase II multi-center clinical trial. I found it particularly interesting because they have a video demonstrating the use of Fibrisyl-AF in open heart surgery. For anyone not accustomed to seeing the inside of a living human body on a regular basis, it’s an amazing sight to see the heart beating inside all of us. Click here to watch the video.

Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation is the most common and significant complication of more than 1 million annual cardiothoracic surgery procedures such as coronary bypass grafts and aortic heart valve repairs. Postoperative Atrial Fibrillation occurs in 20-40% of coronary bypass and 60% of heart valve repair patients. Its occurrence is associated with worse morbidity and longer intensive-care hospitalization.
