Mondays. They can be tough. What we need is a little laughter. A little silliness. Which is why Mondays seem like the perfect day for the new weekly feature I’m going to be calling Wacky Holiday of the Week. Ready for our first one? Here goes:

Snowman Burning Day. Yup. On Friday, March 20th, fun loving people in the USA and in Switzerland will celebrate the arrival of Spring by creating a snowman effigy. The sweet little snowman, which is usually made of paper or straw, is then burned to the ground to show that Spring has finally arrived. I notice this holiday seems more popular in colder areas of the US, like Michigan.
It actually is probably a pretty fun event and makes people feel a bit like they’re hanging out on the beach during a warm summer evening, what with the heat being put off by the bonfire. I’d say this is not a holiday you’d want to celebrate at home, though, unless you checked with your local town hall and fire department. My neighbor has to have a burn permit for his yearly neighborhood bonfire and I’m sure you don’t get a special exemption for burning the innocent little snowman you’ve put together instead of some logs!
Here’s a video of Lake Superior State University students enjoying last year’s Snowman Burning Day:
