Walking as a Family Activity

I’m not a keen walker. I am not one of those types who go out of their way to find a track to walk just because they feel like it. However, this has changed when I moved to New Zealand. With nature at your doorstep, who wouldn’t be converted to becoming a nature lover? So walk, walk, walk we go.

Not a weekend goes by that our little family (and extended relatives and good friends) go for a short drive somewhere to walk and discover trails in New Zealand that we call home. Walking for me is a much better past-time then spending it all day at the mall.
Walking is also good for your health (and your purse!) and this activity is something we would like to pass on to our daughter. We like to see that she gets a good balance of indoor and outdoor activities for her health and mind stimulation.
She’s not into walking much but once she gets started, she likes knowing what the various trees, plants and birds that she sees. Good thing her Dad knows the vegetation and bird species that we see around us
After our walk, we always end it with a quick detour to the ice cream shop as our reward.
What about you? Do you like walking as well?

We love walking. When we were on vacation, it rained almost every day, but we walked in the middle of the day when it would stop for a while. One day we were deciding what to do and my husband was antsy, I could tell, he just wanted to walk and not do touristy stuff. So we walked again.
If you want to know about a LONG PATHWAY, viz: a walkway, currently under negotiation and construction, that travels from the top to the bottom of New Zealand, go to

It is the most exciting and adventurous initiative ever in regard to freedom to walk New Zealand.
