Ways to Read Genetics and Health

If you love to read about genetics and how it affects our lives, Genetics and Health is the blog to read. And here are the ways you can read me every day:

  1. Visit this blog at http://www.geneticsandhealth.com
  2. Add the RSS feed to your reader. See my right sidebar for ways to add Genetics and Health to Bloglines, Feedster, My Yahoo!, My MSN, and LiveJournal.
  3. Subscribe to the Genetics and Health newsletter by entering your email address in the far right sidebar.

Here’s how NOT to read Genetics and Health:

  • Via The Medical Blog Network

Why? I think Australian surgical registrar Barbados Butterfly said it best. Back in March, she asked The Medical Blog Network to remove the feed to her blog and in response, Dmitriy Kruglyak said:

Your feed has been removed. Anyone who wants their feed taken down, all you need to do is ask.

I asked. Ten days ago on June 5, 2006. What was his response today?

I have been busy taking care of people who actually appreciate TMBN efforts.

I will get to dealing with feeds including yours as soon as I can.

I know he’s unhappy with me because I dared to tell him the truth about how I felt regarding the registration method for Grand Rounds during the week he hosted. But I don’t believe I deserved the bird when all I have ever been is courteous and encouraging to him. I have, in fact, spent a great deal of time with him sharing my experience in science and health blogging.

I am asking you again, Dmitriy, to remove my feeds and user account from TMBN. I have tried to do as Shahid suggested but to no avail. Maybe this will get your attention.

  1. OK, you asked for it.

You want people to take your selfish competitive reasons at face value.

You question my motivations and believe “he’s unhappy with me because I dared to tell him the truth”.

You are trying to make a voluntary blog directory into something nefarios and it bothers you a lot.

    Why?

Because new TMBN program is effective in getting health & medical bloggers together, the same thing you are trying to do at b5media which apparently is not working very well.

If anyone is not clear yet: Hsien Hsien Lei is Editor of Science & Health Channel for b5media, a for-profit blog network. So she is direct competitor of TMBN.

Hsien Hsien Lei – do not take your frustrations out on me. Hosting 2 carnivals with a new system is a big undertaking. If I did not respond immediately there was a reason.

That’s it for now, but I will elaborate more on the competitive issues soon in my blog.

  2. Dmitriy: I don’t consider us direct competitors. All I’m asking for is to have my feeds and user account removed from TMBN.

    Thank you.

  3. Your feed has been removed and account disabled.

You may be unwilling to admit your motives (maybe even to yourself), but anyone can put 2+2 together. We are certainly competing for mindshare over who is the leading blog network covering health, medical and wellness sector.

There is no other reason to be bothered and make hay about a voluntary blog registration or question legitimate prioritization in the wake of a major product launch.

    Have a great day.

  4. Thank you! That’s all I was asking for. I knew this post would get your attention and action. As far as I’m concerned, this matter is closed.

  5. I appreciate that and hope that going forward we will compete with more civility.

  7. Jane Chin says:

If I may (and I’m only asking Hsien considering this is her blogging space) – the first issue here is getting feeds taken off. As blogging becomes widespread and everyone competing for page ranking (or whatever makes a site popular), I can understand some bloggers prefer to have feeds used as ways their readers to access their articles versus other sites harvesting content to display on their own sites. That would be my personal preference also.

Second, what’s the problem with blogging for profit as long as you still control the quality of information? It’s like saying all businesses must be crooked because “they’re out to make a buck and must not have good motives.” That is plain b.s.

And I did notice that the medical blog network displays third party ads… maybe I’m not understanding what I’m looking at, but wouldn’t the revenues generated go toward supporting the efforts of the site operator?

Last… the blog universe is large enough to accommodate SEVERAL outstanding and competing blog networks. There are enough of us PhDs and MDs and PsyDs and PharmDs and allied healthcare practitioners to contribute something worthwhile NO MATTER WHAT TYPE OF BLOGGING METHOD. And trust me, we can make more $ in private practice than blogging, no matter how much “ad revenues” we gain. So I know most medical bloggers who blog do it because they truly love to share information and want to contribute their time.

The good thing with all the choices we have is that we can choose what atmosphere and attitudes we prefer to keep company with.

  8. Jane Chin says:

addendum – and BY NO MEANS am I suggesting that “TMBN” is a splog and only harvests other people’s feeds.

All I’m saying is that some bloggers are becoming more watchful of this growing trend and need to watch for their own brand dilution.

  9. Jane: Thanks for your input, Jane. As per the links I gave in the post, other bloggers have raised issues which are still not being addressed at TMBN – TMBN assigned permalinks to other blogs’ entries, comment spaces at TMBN for each post from other blogs. When I first joined, I thought I’d be ok with this system. But as I learned more from other bloggers like Barbados Butterfly, I began to realize it wasn’t ok.

And agreed on there being enough room for all of us. The more HIGH QUALITY, RELIABLE information there is out there, the better everyone’s health will be.

Now I’ll just go back to writing more original content for Genetics and Health!

  10. Jane: I appreciate your fairness. It takes a few iterations to formulate the right policy when REAL technology innovation is taking place.

Hsien: You knew about TMBN approach to feeds and Barbados Butterfly comments for a long time. I told you about the plans for community long time ago. Saying that NOW you are suddenly bothered by feed comments and permalinks is simply not credible.

Let’s face it – you did not believe TMBN can build a real community that will attract notice and now that we have real momentum you are getting frustrated.

    Now back to work.

  11. Dmitriy: Quite the contrary. I like to take my time to think things over and until it happened to me, I did not believe that you could be as they said. I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt, but unfortunately it didn’t work out.

  12. Christina says:

I have encouraged you to get out of that shady operation for months, Hsien. I am sorry it took such dramatic measures to do it, but I am positive it is to your benefit. Better sooner rather than later.

  13. Now you have given yourself away entirely. b5media bloggers are ganging up and accusing a competitor of being “a shady operation”.

    Do you have any decency?

There is no point to debate further on this thread, I will respond to these attacks later on my blog when I get time for this.

  14. Christina: I know and thanks for looking out for me. I like to give people a chance whenever possible but I won’t stand for being mistreated.

  15. Christina says:

I just calls em likes I sees em, D. I have been watching your network for a long time.

  16. Dimitry: Two b5media bloggers does not a conspiracy make.

  17. Christina says:

We could probably pull some more in if you want to. :) LOL They do love you around here, and won’t like to see you bullied I am *quite* sure.

  18. Christina: Behave!! All I wanted was for Dmitriy to sever our ties and that’s enough for me. :)

  19. Now who is being bullied?

Christina makes her agenda clear, but I have to give credit to Hsien for knowing better.

  20. Christina says:

Yes’m. I’d like to ask what the heck d. is talking about, but I will hush up now that my agenda is revealed. ;)

  21. Deb L says:

I’ve known Hsien since before there WAS a b5media, and am biased in her favor. Seems like quite a sticky situation, and I’m really glad for you Hsien, that you are out of it now and can focus on more productive and pleasurable things!

  22. Deb: Thanks, Deb. Now that the issue’s resolved, I’m happy to move on. :)
