Star Jones in GlamourThere’s been a lot of speculation about whether celebrity Star Jones had some kind of weight loss surgery after losing 160 pounds in three years. She had previously held back from commenting, but now she is ready to tell all.

Star’s story of her gastric bypass surgery, entitled “I’m Ready To Open Up,” will be featured in the September issue of Glamour magazine (out on newsstands August 7th). She speaks candidly about the experience of being overweight:

“Even though I claimed to be just fine with my weight, I saw how other women were treated like the girlfriend, while I was treated like the good friend…Whenever I felt lonely, a Double Whopper with cheese became my friend.”(Glamour.com)

“The fact that Star has decided to be so open about her weight-loss surgery is tremendously helpful to the millions of American women who look at celebrities and think: ‘They’re losing weight; why can’t I?’ By setting the record straight, Star is helping women understand their healthiest options, and sending the message that taking control of your weight can save your life,” says Glamour’s Editor in Chief, Cindi Leive.

Having had gastric bypass in 1995 and losing 130 pounds, I have now regained 70 of them. Do I feel like a failure? Yes, some days, but the fact that I am still 60 pounds lighter than before I had the bypass offers a glimmer of success for me. Is every day a struggle to exercise and eat right? Yes, it is, but the surgery gave my life back to me and I would do it again. Being able to fit in airline seats and to be able to go to the theater and be seated comfortably were thrilling by products of the weight loss, along with decreased back and knee pain. There is no easy solution to weight loss and while gastric bypass helps, those of us who battle weight, even after surgery there are daily choices and efforts that have to be made.
