What Choice Does She Have?
Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant, we all know that but what choice does she really have in the matter? Of course she could have done the “responsible” thing of not getting her 16-year old self pregnant but that is hindsight, right (Newsweek has a great article on how to educate your children on teenage pregnancy)? At this point it is moot.
Right now, as a celebrity, she does not really have a choice on whether or not to keep her child. If she decided to have an abortion she would be blackballed because even if she tried to keep that private it would, most likely, hit the media like a landslide.
Even though the Roman Catholic Church while firmly opposed to premarital sex, embraces the message that adoption is among the best options if an unmarried teen does become pregnant, said Deirdre McQuade, a spokeswoman for the US Catholic Bishops Conference. And, there is no way that she could hide a pregnancy from the media and then make an adoption plan. Any agency aiding her in her plan would inevitably leak information, as much as they tried not to.
Wendy Wright, president of Concerned Women for America, said both “Juno” and the Spears pregnancy demonstrated to teens that there are costs to engaging in sex.
“Too often, sex is presented as having no consequences,” she said. “In both of these cases, the girls are pretty much admitting that they made some wrong choices, yet they are acting responsibly now that they’re facing the consequences. That’s a mature response.”
But is it the mature response?
The new movie Juno, which stars Golden Globe candidate Jennifer Garner, highlights the moral decision of keeping the baby.
In the new hit movie “Juno” and now in real life with Jamie Lynn Spears, 16-year-old girls get pregnant and decide to bear the child rather than opt for abortion. For many social conservatives, it’s a challenging story line – they condemn the teen sex but hail the ensuing choice.
“It’s a double-edged sword in the Christian community,” said Bill Maier, a vice president of the conservative ministry Focus on the Family.
“We should commend girls like Jamie Lynn Spears for making a courageous decision to have the baby. On the other hand, there’s nothing glamorous or fun about being an unwed teen mother.”
I have difficulty believing that this was an unplanned pregnancy rather than an unwisely planned pregnancy.
I think if she didn’t tell the media about the pregnancy, she could have had a quiet and secret abortion, if she chose to. However, I don’t think that was an option that even crossed her mind. And celebrity adoptions only work one way: if they adopt. As sad as it is, her celebrity status robbed her of options. Of course she will have the money and the help to raise her child that many teen mothers don’t.
One of my cousins got pregnant at 16, and had her first child at 17. She did her leaving certificate that year and two months later had baby #2. Now she is 26 and has 7 kids. I think she is a rather awful person and a medium bad parent, but that doesn’t have anything to do with her being a mother at 17. I hope for the best for Jamie Lynn’s baby.
i think jamie lynn spears just wants to be a big star like her sister so she decided to tell the media that shes pregnant.If Jamie lynn is pregnant why would she tell the media thats shes pregnant its her buisness not nobody elses so she should keep it to herself.if i was her i would keep it to myself i wouldnt want anybody else to know.I would only tell my parents and my sister i would tell the whole family maybe some friends but not tell the freakin media.Their gonna make a big deal out of nothing just because Jamie Lynn Spears is pregnant?? I have a feeling jamie lynn is just gonna take care of the baby just like britney did and some body else is gonna have to get custody of jamie`s baby.i just hope she doesnt turn out to be just like her sister because that would be just terrible!!!!!
