What I love about…

It’s b5media’s Science and Health Theme Day once again, and since it’s February, the obvious theme is LOVE…
Love? And flu?
What’s to love about the topic I write for this blog? Here are my top three.
1. Blogging is like solving a crossword puzzle. Before blogging, I used to write scientific papers at least once a year (still do). With the myriad of news on bird flu and seasonal flu, my ability to write for science has sharpened. From sniffing for the newsworthy articles, digging for the correct words to write, to paraphrasing or re-structuring a news story to fit the short paragraphs that readers can digest – it’s a great mental exercise.
2. Blogging about the flu is all about heroes. There’s a certain sobriety about the topic I write. Good news is very scarce when dealing with outbreaks and epidemics. So whenever I hear about the latest research breakthroughs or endeavors, I am thankful that there are scientists working in our behalf to better our lives. There is much work that goes behind anticipating potential viruses for next year’s flu season and creating the appropriate vaccines. Research into the dreaded H5N1 or Spanish flu is a race against time. While those in lab coats do the actual labor, I blog safely about them and what they try to eradicate.
3. Getting paid to do what I love. Science is etched somewhere in my genes. I’ve always been fascinated by it. Writing is a gift I’ve neglected for years. I never thought I could find a mesh for these two passions. That I get paid is not too bad either.
Hope you discover what you love about blogging too.
