What if depression happens during pregnancy, not after?

I think we’re doing a good job of letting people know about the reality of postpartum depression. More resources are becoming available, such as websites like Postpartum Progress. Other sites like MayoClinic.com have sections devoted to explaining the problem and helping people recognizing the signs and symptoms.
But depression can begin *during* pregnancy and this can be very confusing for the mom-to-be and her family. And, because of the pregnancy, treating the depression can be a bit tricky. But, I’m jumping ahead of myself here. How? Because first we have to get people to recognize that perinatal (during pregnancy) depression is a reality as much as postpartum depression is.
The Maternal and Child Health Library is definitely doing its bit to help raise awareness and provide information and resources for women who feel they may be depressed. It’s a wonderful resource not just for the woman, but for her family and friends so they, too, can learn and have a better idea of what to do.
You will find information including where to find care and many websites devoted to the topic. There are also resources for professionals, electronic publications, databases, and electronic newsletters.
If you’re pregnant and think you’re suffering from depression, it’s important to talk about it, to get help. It’s the best thing you can do for yourself.
