What is a Date?

Tonight Kerri and I had a date. Nothing fancy. After eleven years of or marriage and three children sometimes is means dropping the kids off at Grandma’s and heading to Penn Station for a sub. Of course we talked about the kids a little (Samantha finished first grade this week – W00t!), but we also covered work, home, politics and money. An hour or so later we were on our way back to get the kids.

I know, I know… not a very romantic date. But a date nonetheless, because after all, what is a date? At this stage of life, a date is leisure time together without the kids. And while I love those blessed hours between 8:30 and 11:30 pm when the kids are in bed, they don’t count as a date. We are still on duty, even if the inmates are sleeping.

Now I wouldn’t want every date to be this low key, but sometimes it is more important just to make time – any time! – that to make a big deal. I was delighted to share a quick bite and some adult conversation with my wife. Besides, who can pass up a Chicken Teriyaki and Fresh-Cut Fries?

I agree that you have to make time for date night. Time slips by so quickly that I don’t know how we miss date night like we do. Before kids, we would have date night once a week. Once Turkey Butt came along, we made sure we went out once a month. Now that Little Man is here, we have gone out maybe 3 times in 10 months. We can really feel the strain when we don’t take time out for us. Life just gets so busy and work takes up too much time. We should definitely get back on track. But we also have to pay for babysitting so a date goes expensive really quickly when you are in the hole $25 off the bat.
