What is this machine?

Have a close look and try and work out what is going on here before you read on.

In the basket at the bottom is a pile of freshly shredded dried squid.  At the top is a big mechanical monster that picks up the dried and quite flat squid and strips it down into deliciously thin slivers.  I am not usually impressed by his sort of display, but the shreds that came out were the best that I have ever tasted.  Perhaps this is another example of where food loses flavour fast once it is processed even if it has already gone through a battering to get it to that stage.  Shredded dried squid may not be for everyone, but I really think that you will change your opinion once you have tried it.
