What kind of an adult would you like your child to become?

Motherhood is hard. It doesn’t come with an instruction manual, and yet an entire life hangs in the balance: your child’s.

In this season of Passover and Easter I’m thinking about hope, and about chances, and about what really matters in life. What kind of man do I hope my child will become, in this day where children kill children and so many people seem to believe that fame and wealth is a privilege and a right? Do I have the right to be like Frank Lloyd Wright’s mother, who plied him with blocks and pounded the idea of being an architect in his head from the time he could stack his abc’s? Do I sit back and watch my child unfold like a wildflower or a weed? Do I care about what he does for a living, or do I care about what he does for the living?

I hope I can teach him compassion, kindness, and the wealth that comes with sharing one’s knowledge with others. I hope I can teach him to stand for what he believes in, and guide him toward those universal truths of what is good and right in a man’s life. I hope I can teach him to measure his wealth, not in what he owns, but in what he knows.
