What the Obamas Planted

Michelle Obama broke ground on the South Lawn of the White House with two dozen local elementary school students in late March to create a 1100-square-foot garden with 55 types of vegetables.

Below are just a few of the vegetables she planted, how early to plant them, and the days to maturity:

Carrots — 2-3 weeks before — 50-80
Broccoli — 2 weeks before — 80-100
Collards — 4 weeks before — 60-80
Leaf lettuce — 3-4 weeks before — 40-60
Spinach — 3-6 weeks before — 50-60
Radishes — 2-3 weeks before — 20-30
Kale — 4 weeks before — 40-50
Onions — 4 weeks before — 100-120
Sugar Snap Peas — 6-8 weeks before — 65-70
Shallots — 4-6 weeks before — 60-120
