What’s the dog in the vacuum commercial?

November 20, 2008 by Chloe Findlay-Harder

Have you seen this commercial for Black & Decker vacuums?

Is that not the cutest thing ever! But, what kind of dogs did they actually use?  And, no – they didn’t dye the white dog black :-)

The white dog is a Maltese, an ancient breed of  toy dog originally from the Island of Malta.  They are small, intelligent and beautiful – with a long, white coat.  Their coat requires daily brushing to look it’s best.

The black dog is a Havanese, a small companion dog originally from Cuba.   They are cheerful companion dogs and may even be good for some people with allergies!  In some dogs, the coat cords naturally (this one is corded) – but whether corded or not, the coat requires daily care.

The Havanese in the commercial is Ch. Fuzzy Farm Ragtime of Namaskar, bred by Alice Lawrence (The Fuzzy Farm) and owned by Robert and Karen Vence and Steve and Alice Lawrence.

I just saw this commercial last night and laughed so hard! I loved it, it was almost Super Bowl worthy, as hubby said.

Sorry – I meant to say the WHITE dog is a MALTESE. The black corded dog is MY Havanese!!! There were NO pulis in this commercial. Sorry for the confusion.

the dog in the commercial isnt a havanese, it is a puli…

  4. Are you sure the white dog isn’t also a Havanese? It looks just like my dog, who is a 4-year-old male blonde Havanese. Both dogs are adorable.

There is no question…. the white dog is a Maltese and the black dog is MY corded Havanese! The Maltese is a professional dog actor, seen in many TV and Print commercials. This was the debut performance of our Havanese, Rags (aka ‘the black dog’). His coat is corded. There are several breeds which can be corded; the Havanese is one of the corded breeds, along with the Puli, the Poodle, the Komondor and the Bergamasco. – Alice Lawrence

  6. Hi Alice–
Yes, I’m aware Havs can be corded, as well as what other breeds are. Your Rags is adorable. Because our Havanese is white, and in full coat, he is frequently mistaken for a Maltese (even more so when he is a pup). I take your word for it about the first dog, as you would definitely know. Thanks, and love your Rags!

    Alice,

After seeing the Black and Decker commercial, I had to find out what breed of dog was featured. At first, I thought it was a puli, but after further research, found it was a corded havanese.

I am interested in an adolescent/young adult black havanese bitch with a coat perfect for cording. I have locs and want us to match! I am not interested in showing or breeding; I just would like a “mini-me” to keep me company in my apartment and enjoy the lavish life.

Please contact me if you are able to assist or can point me in the right direction.

    Thanks.
