What’s your favorite milk?

In Switzerland I got in the habit of using organic whole-grain rice milk in my coffee, and I loved it. It doesn’t froth like cow milk (or soy milk), but I liked its flavor. While I had to buy my rice milk at the health food store, plain soy milk was readily available at the big local supermarket.

Here in the US, I am happy to see that soy milk has become a staple in big supermarkets, if only in the form of Silk. While better than nothing, Silk contains some things I’d rather not find in my soy milk, such as sugar. There is a no-sugar-added version available some places, but I haven’t been able to find it consistently.

I’ve also been to several natural/organic/whole food stores here in the past month, and I love the milk substitute selection that these shops offer. Milks from almonds, rice, oats, soy, hemp, and so many other vegan sources are lined up on the shelves begging for me to take them home. I recently purchased an almond milk with very few ingredients that I’m looking forward to trying.

What’s your favorite milk? What do you use it for (coffee, cereal, baking, etc.)?

I’ve been very happy with unsweetened soy milk, such that I haven’t ventured into other kinds. My local supermarket (*not* in a fancy ‘hood) sells several varieties of Silk, including unsweetened, but when I can I buy the (cheaper) Whole Foods brand.

Almond Breeze. It doesn’t have the chalky aftertaste that you get with soymilk.

I agree with Marti–Almond Breeze! It’s 60 calories per cup, but you can find unsweetened original and vanilla, both at just 40 calories. Great taste, vegan and low-cal.. it’s perfect.

Edensoy and Rice Dream have always been favorites of mine.

I use them with oatmeal, over cereal or just drink as a treat.

  5. I love Vitasoy Light Original. It’s richer and creamier than most brands, low in calories, and plenty of calcium. Looks like they’ve got a bit of sugar – sorry :( Maybe I’ll try their unsweetened soy milk.

I a vegan newbie and have only tried silk..but it has been excellent with cereals, not so great with coffee and tea
