It's right for the teacher to get fired, but it wasn't a criminal act. I've substitute at high schools, and I really do feel for the male teachers. Once a person turns 18, he/she can have sex with whoever... just not their teacher? I can understand having sex with students as being against the school's policies, due to the stress that would come once the relationship is public. But a teacher that has sex with an adult (since 18 year olds are legally adults) should not be considered a criminal and should not serve jail time for that. If the 18 year old gave legal consent, then why should a teacher be sent behind bars? There are other authority figures in society besides teachers -- why shouldn't this extend to them? 18 as an age of consent is already significantly higher than many other western countries, but if restrictions are imposed even beyond that age, it just serves more to keep sex as taboo.
