When should you tell your coworkers that you’re expecting?

It’s a question that many women have – when should they tell their boss or their colleagues that they’re pregnant?

Much of when you tell your coworkers depends on what type of work you do, as much as when you feel comfortable doing so. If you work in certain fields, you may need to be relocated during the course of your pregnancy, particularly in the first few months.

If the type of job you do doesn’t have any bearing on when you need to tell people, when should you tell? Some women are bursting to tell people right away, while others don’t want their coworkers to know until they can’t hide it any longer. Some women also prefer that their bosses don’t know for as long as possible because they feel that they may be discriminated against in the workplace, in terms of continuing education or advancement opportunities.

What do you think? Is there an ideal time for this news in the workplace?

Don’t forget the Prevent drownings (plus a DVD give-away). The give-away ends June 15 at 11:59 PM.

I wanted to wait, but was so incredibly sick that I missed day after day after day and finally had to ‘fess up, not because I was in trouble (I had accrued tons of sick time and was a manager, so had some leeway with working from home) but because everyone thought I had a deathly disease. They were very relieved when I showed them the sonogram and noted, “THIS is the reason I’ve been missing so much work!”
