Where Have the Family Shows Gone?

What happened to the good ol’ days of family comedies? I’m not taking about that bygone era of black-and-white, Ricky & Lucy, Ward & June. I’m talking about the 80’s. You know… Cliff & Claire. Steven & Elyse. Tim & Jill.

Heck, what happened to Al & Peg or Dan & Rosanne?

There just don’t seem to be many shows about mom, dad and the kids any more. OK… there aren’t many sitcoms – family life’s preferred habitat – period!

I’m skimming through the prime time Fall TV lineup, and I see maybe a half-dozen… and most of those are part of the Sunday Night Fox animation block: Simpsons, King of the Hill, etc. Where are the simple stories about Dad forgetting his anniversary while the boys fight over who takes which twin to the junior high dance? I miss those days.

That’s a question I ask all of the time. I guess people would rather have raunch than quality shows. And then with people being so desensitized to everything…it’s only going downhill.
