Which dog breed should the Obamas choose?

President-elect Barack Obama has promised his two little girls a dog now that the campaign is over – but there’s one little problem – dog allergies!
There are several dog breeds that are less prone to causing an allergic reaction – but there isn’t a truly “hypoallergenic” dog out there. The main problem with dog allergies isn’t the fur or hair, but usually the dog’s saliva and dander (the doggy version of dandruff) Frequent bathing and grooming of your dog may help to reduce reactions as well.
If you’re buying a dog (from a responsible breeder of course!) and have dog allergies, spending time with different breeds of dogs may point you in the right direction. Some dog breeds may trigger a reaction in some people, but not others. Meeting with breeders and their dogs is a valuable tool. Your doctor may even be able to do a breed-specific allergy test to pinpoint your allergies.
So what are some good options for the Obamas?
Poodles come in three sizes and smart, affectionate dogs.

Bichon Frise is another option – like the poodle it needs regular grooming to keep it’s coat looking the best, but they are small and cheerful dog.

The Chinese Crested Dog is a more exotic choice than either the Poodle or Bichon Frise. They actually come in two coat types – the Powderpuff (fully coated) or the Hairless (they have hair on their feet, tail and head).
