Whining? Or just presenting the facts?

When someone asks how you are, do you sometimes hesitate about what to answer? I’m not talking about the casual chatting that we come across as we go about our day, but when someone who you share your life with (good friends, family) asks, do you automatically with “fine” or do you tell the truth? If you tell the truth, do you temper it so you don’t sound like you’re whining or complaining all the time?
To me, there seems to be a fine line. I don’t want to always say that I’m sore or hurting but – if I’m not fine, should I pretend I am? Where is the line between discussing how you’re feeling and complaining too much?
Every once in a while, I’ll tell my husband that something *really* hurts. I told him a long time ago, that if I told him every ache and pain I had, I’d be telling him all day long, so when I do complain, he needs to take notice. I just feel that if I complain about something hurting, I’m whining yet again.
How do you handle it?

For me, it depends on the person who is asking. If it’s not a close friend, I just say “fine” unless I’m obviously in discomfort.
