After serving eight years as a faithful White House First Cat, India (better known as “Kitty” or “Willie”), passed away on Sunday, January 4.
India was 18 years old and a beautiful black American Shorthair.
I’m not sure if India preferred to stay out of the spotlight, or if Bush just liked Barney better. Either way, I had trouble finding a press photo of her. But you can catch the one at the White House site.
I wrote about Socks, another former First Cat, back in November. I still have hope that the Obama family will decide to add a First Cat to the White House. It just shouldn’t be catless!

Well, looks like India lived a LONG life! That’s good. A shame she didn’t share the spotlight. We need to see more cats in the news reports! They brighten our lives so much.
I just saw the picture of India, a BEAUTIFUL coal black girl! May she frolick in Heaven with the other cats who have passed on….
Hi Lynn. Yes, she did have a long life! I agree too — more cats in the news : )
