If you haven’t read the interview with author Stephen Viscusi yet, I encourage you to click over to this post. Stephen was kind enough to give Career and Kids an exclusive interview and donate a copy of his book, Bulletproof Your Job, as a giveaway to one lucky reader.
To win a copy of Bulletproof Your Job, leave a comment on this post with a concern, comment, or opinion you have about the economy, job hunting, or concerns you have about your job for the upcoming year.
Leave your comment by Sunday, January 18th. I’ll choose a winner at random and announce the lucky guy or gal the next day. Good luck!

Texas Congressman Ron Paul has hit out at US monetary policy, warning that fear based politics are being used to promote the bailout culture in the same way they were used to sell the Iraq war.
“Governments that want to take over, undermine our liberties and gain more power always use the fear factor. They did this leading up to the war in Iraq, they do it on foreign policy, now they’re doing it on monetary, economic and financial problems.”
I have a bookkeeping business that I run from home. I have 5 clients two of which are construction. My business has declined by 40% because the construction clients are not working.
My life has been effected by my husbands lay offs (twice in 6 months) and my own termination. We could use any help we can get and if this book has some of the answerrs I will read it from the first word to the last.
The company I worked for had a major lay-off before the holidays. I was among those who lost their jobs
Not a whole lot of jobs available in our area. Scarty.
I’m currently in a year long internship, so I’m concerned about being able to get a job once it ends, given how things look.
I am a communications consultant who works from home and while I currently have solid employment, I’m worried about where to find my next project.
I don’t think the government will be bailing me out if the economy continues to deteriorate.
There have been rumors of layoffs in 2009. That is a concern.
it sucks
The dire state of the economy is affecting everyone, even those who refuse to believe so (but I doubt there’s anyone who’s questioning the current status of the economy now). Some who are being swept into the worst of things are my aunts and uncles who live further up north who have worked in companies and factories for a great part of their lives. I spoke to my uncle, who works as a supervisor or manager at a factory, last week and he told me that they were going through their fourth round of layoffs this year.
My friend’s family recently announced that they’re closing their restaurant. They told us they’ve seen a significant decline in income recently. I know that my family’s business is seeing a great decline as well, and this worries me, because my parents keep insisting on me not getting a job, and just focusing on studying. That they’ll pay for me to get through college. But my younger brother will be in college in a few years as well, and college isn’t getting cheaper.
Is there a way out of this mess?
What will be the result of this?
As a commenter before me put, “it sucks.”
I have concerns about being kicked off my team at work. People are just not spending money on luxury items which is what we sell. I don’t blame them with the cost of food and gas being so high.
I would live to read this book!
I worry about the economy, because our adult daughter has lost her job due to it. I have no idea where she will find another job reasonably close to where she lives. I worry about her all the time.
I don’t have a job, but my husband is on “final written warning” at his!
BUSH – Worst President EVER!!!
This would be a good book to read. Monetary problems have been a tough thing to deal with since I lost my job because of a disability.
i’m out of work and will be searching more in the new year
My comment about the economy…what goes up must come down. What goes down will eventually come back up. Economic cycles happen, that’s why we are supposed to save for rainy days. Thanks for the giveaway!
I recently relocated to Adelaide, Australia from Singapore. And it has been a little tough looking for work as the job market is a little soft at the moment. I’ve spoken to some recruitment agencies and even they say the market is weak at the moment. But I’m sure things will look up in the new year.
Job hunting advice from the trenches, invest in a good pair shoes with good arch supports and buy some memory foam padding to put in them, after a long day of endless meetings, your feet will truly thank you!
I need a job, but can’t find one. I am 47 and worry that I will never be hired because of my age!
My husband is out of work and it’s been really tough – there are not alot of jobs out there to choose from.

I fear the recession is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.
Keeping one’s job is very important in this economy, and regardless of the economy, the job seeker’s talent, training, experience or readiness, if they have a disability the road is always rough. In good times and bad the unemployment rate among qualified people with disabilities exceeds 80%.
I think the recession is going to be tough and when things get tough the tough get going right? Recession is a nationwide self esteem problem. One that can only be solved when we begin to trust each other again (which will be hard) and we are all confident in the direction the country is going.
Even before the economy nosed over, bulletproofing was a concern. Some employers just have their own agenda regardless of your performance or skills (like those gov’t/institutional jobs that they must advertise, but they already picked the person they want & tailored the job requirements to fit him/her . . . you don’t know it yet, but you have no shot). It will be interesting to see how the book discusses these.
My concern is not getting ahead…I want to be considered for promotions, but have not done so yet.
I’m concerd that, with the poor ecconomy, I wont be able to maintain my home business. That’s the real career that I want, a stay-at-home job… but with bills to pay I may be forced out! :p
I have concerns about people losing their jobs or not being able to find employment!
I’d like this for my “kids” who are still in the workforce
I am unfortunately not working and will be hoping to find something soon but I am concerned because of the state of the economy. Fingers crossed.
I lost my full time job almost two months ago and immediately set out to find part time work. It didn’t take too long to find something, but the pay is so low I would actually make more money if I had stayed on unemployment. But I’d rather be working, even though I am losing out on money. I hope the economy picks up soon, and perhaps I will be able to return to my old job. Thank you for the give-away.
So far things don’t seem as bad as after 9/11 when every day there were thousands of layoffs.
My oldest boy who works, works, works should read this.If i win he will get it on his birthday.
I worry about my children, who are young and finishing their highschool education. What direction should they go in? Where will jobs be?
Thanks
(in Canada)
the economy worries me big time. Thier are no jobs in my state, well their are. But no one is qualified for them.
anyway
I think it would be hard raising kids in this world now a days because you might lose a job at a drop of a hat.
Although as an employee of the state, we are experiencing cutbacks, I am not going to worry. God says that I will be taken care of as a child of God. This is going to be my year of prosperity and I plan to use the prosperity to help others less fortunate!
What a terrific offer! I don’t know anyone in this economy who couldn’t use a little bullet-proofing of their job particularly in this economy! Even though I have a job, I am still concerned. I want to do all that I can do to stay employed. Thank you so much!
A major employer close by just closed, putting about 6000 people out of work, a local plant just layed off for the first time in 21yrs. in business, then my husband just got news his company is closing in 30 days, this is going to get really tuff, thanks for the giveaway, and good luck to all of you in 2009
I hope I won’t lose my job in 2009 but the economy doesn’t look good
I’ve been out of work as a direct marketing sales person for over a year (due to an auto accident). During this time I worked from home, but unfortunately, after six months I was released by my employer.
Like anyone in the current job market, I am extremely apprehensive my prospects of getting another job in the same field and about competing with job candidate that are 10 and twenty years younger than me.
Although I’m interested in getting involved in the Social Web sites (like FaceBook etc…), I really don’t want to load my entire e-mail address book because I have competing clients that I don’t want them to know about each other….
I am not sure if there is a solution for this or not.
I am looking forward to getting back into workplace (as soon as I’m approved to drive again) but I am extremely nervous about the entire Job Search process.
WOW that looks like a great book. I need that since the company I work for is reducing hours all over.
Gone are the days when doing a good job guarentees your job. We will be looking for new jobs this year that will provide more stablity for us.
Very nervous about returning to work after a huge medical issue, that affected even my thinking. If it fails, where do I go next, with little training and lots of “life experience”?
I hope I win the book.
I work for a very small company, and my husband for a city agency…both a bit nervous!
I am worried that the economy well get worse
I am recently retired . I worry for my adult children. One is an Rn and I donot worry for her. Another is a muralist and her business has been tenuous at best. And my son is in Construction. My Ira has had a slow leak continuous and constant. Got any anti wrinkle cream?
I think most of us are in for a hard time financially this year
I was laid off and took several “underemployed” positions to help work through. This actually hurts, since potential employers see it as a lack of ambition when, in fact, it was the opposite. I didn’t want to collect unemployment and do nothing. My age doesn’t help, and I know I don’t come off all that great in interviews. It does get discouraging, and I can’t even go out and splurge on something fantastic to make myself feel better. *sigh*
I was laid off two years ago, and was fortunate to find a great job several months later, but am always very conscious of how easily I could get laid off again.
I am looking for work as I am no longer able to perform the job I had for more than 20 years. I am going to have to develop new skills and I now have health problems to boot. My health insurance is a huge expense and I am very concerned.
