Winter Weather Home Preparation and Survival

winter weather

When the weatherman begins to give warning of a wintry mix, potential ice storm or heavy snow, I tend to kick into a mode of preparedness and survival.

I make my way through the house taking care that certain things are done and in place in the event we lose electricity for any period of time.

The first thing I do is make sure all flashlights have new batteries and are fully functional.

I’ve made sure to keep a supply of canned food items stocked that can be opened with a hand opener and without needing to be cooked.

When the weather begins to look really bad, bathtubs are immediately filled with water for washing or flushing purposes.

I stock a supply of bottled water with some of the packets of dink mix.

Additional necessities include:

  • Candles and matches on hand
  • Batteries in the portable radio
  • Cell phone charged
  • A supply of essential prescription medications
  • Plenty of pet food on hand

Once I have this check list complete – I feel I can survive anything Mother Nature can dish out – for a few days at least.

What are some of the extra things you do for your family to prepare for winter disaster?
