Wire Coat Hanger Roasting Stick

En Guarde!

First of all, don’t do what I did.  I didn’t have any normal, uncoated hangers, I used the white ones.  I suggest you don’t because I don’t know what the coating will do to your food when it gets heated up over a fire.  (Of course, in a natural disaster, feel free to make them out of whatever you can get your hands on…not that you’d be able to read this post, but, say, for future reference.)

Now, cut the hangar just under the hook and straighten it out until it is very long.  Next, make the kinks in the end you’ll be roasting with (see picture).  This will keep the roastees (okay, that was a stretch, but it was fun—let’s say, the items to cook on your roaster) from falling into the fire as readily.

Wavy…

Now, don’t bend the handle from the other end!  First, decide how long you want the whole piece to be.  The handle-make should start from there.  Keep in mind that the heavier your item to be cooked, the shorter you want your stick (in this instance, anyway)—hotdogs will want less hanger extended from the handle than marshmallows. (Starbursts are another story—ask me in comments if you care to know the story…)
Next, make the handle by bending it where we talked about above and then bending it again, that will make the wire go in the opposite direction from before.  At this point, I’m going to give you directions for a simple handle.  The one I made isn’t as simple…I also wasn’t as happy with it as I thought I would be.

Back and Forth and Through and Around…

One last bend is required; make the handle as long or even a bit longer than the hand that will use it.  If many hands will use it, then make it for the biggest hand of the bunch, or guess like normal people.  Once you have judged how long the handle should be, make the last bend into the original wire piece and wind the wire around it to make a rectangular handle.  Cut excess wire and file or sand so people don’t cut themselves!

You may have noticed a more primitive one of these in my Ancient Junk Creators post—he really wowed his friends, eh?

  1. Miso says:

Don’t forget to sand off all the paint before you cook with it.
Even the ones that look like bare metal have a clear coating to prevent rusting.
If you don’t sand the coating off the wire before you cook with it, then coating will soften/melt from the heat and become part of what you’ve cooked to eat.

  2. Thank you for your very important note!

I was unaware of the coating on the “bare metal” ones.
