Wisdom teeth – mine are on their way out

June 16, 2008 by Marijke Durning, RN

The time has come – I have to get my wisdom teeth out on Wednesday. At 47 years old, I figured I was spared that rite of passage that most people get done much early in their adult lives. Alas, I was wrong.teeth_nc

My dentist asked me a couple of months ago why I still had my wisdom teeth. “Because I’m attached to them?” I answered. Actually, the topic had never come up before. However, he was very concerned about how awkward they were and how difficult it would be if there was a problem. My dentist felt it was better that they come out now before they became an issue. But most importantly, if they come out, my migraines may decrease and my facial pain may disappear. Wouldn’t that be great?

So, stay tuned on my whining as the time comes. My oral surgeon warned me that people over 35 years can have more complications, such as dry socket, infection, and increased pain. I’m off to research wisdom teeth and if you are interested in what is involved, stay tuned!

Don’t forget the poetry book give-away: Poetry to ease the pain? (and a poetry book give-away).

It ends June 19th.

keep me updated. I still have mine too but you’re way much older than I am :) The dentist keeps telling me to get them out but I’ve been avoiding it for years….

  2. @ Anja – smart a$$

(Anja is my baby sister – I’m allowed to say that to her….)

I wish you Good Luck Marijke! Please remember to rest and take any pain meds you’re prescribed.

My dad had his wisdom teeth out 2-3 years ago (at 51) and didn’t have any complications. I hope all goes well and you don’t have any either.

Keep us posted, but only when you can.

My brother had the hardest time with getting his out. I seriously believed it was the end of the world… until I saw other people get them out and function well even the very next day.

Just hope they aren’t compacted & that it all goes well!
