Woman Illegally Performed Abortions

A San Diego woman, Bertha Bugarin, has been sentenced to over six years in prison for posing as a doctor and performing abortions. She apparently operated five different abortion clinics in California, mostly in the L.A. and Santa Ana areas.

One of women Bugarin treated ended up having “severe complications, had to be hospitalized three times and eventually gave birth prematurely.”
I have to wonder how, in this modern day and age, certain people can get away with this, even for a short period of time. I mean, this woman ran a clinic (more than one!), so it wasn’t like she was doing this in a back alley somewhere. Someone had to approve her paperwork to open an entire clinic, right?
