Women + Attractiveness = High Maintenance (???)

Well, I’m sure most of you, ladies, will naturally disagree but hear me out for a moment cuz I’ve got a bits to share about the matter.

From my own personal observation, I’ve noticed (seen, heard and experienced) a lot of the women whom my guy friends find attractive are automatically classified as ‘high-maintenance’. I can’t help but wonder if there’s a pattern to it.

These guys find these women attractive because these women:

  • dress well or are stylish
  • put on make up
  • maintain a certain lifestyle
  • are pretty (obviously)

If you’ll notice, these are superficial attributes and don’t really tell much about the girl but I find that these women share these common denominators. These women are attractive but will be labeled as ‘high-maintenance’ because of it, too. The dilemma here, though, is that while the men find these women attractive, they’ll get turned off because of the ‘high-maintenance’ part all too soon. This is stereotyping at its worst.

I can understand why men would think twice in dating a woman who’s ‘high-maintenance’ but what I don’t understand is why they seem to typecast every attractive (using the points I shared above) as one. Moreover, why don’t these men change their views on what they think is attractive so that they won’t be drawn to these so-called ‘high-maintenance’ women? For all you know, some women turn out to be like that simply because they’re trying to be attractive to men.

Vicious cycle. Gah.

Thoughts?

I ran into this last week….I am a woman who takes care of how she looks, stylish, wears makeup….but I don’t consider myself “high maintenance” although I get stereotyped that way alot. I really am a low key very passive girl. To me, “high maintenance” means a woman who is naggy and always complaining. I have friends that are like that, and what gets me is they always have boyfriends that cater to them hand and foot. It seems to me that sometimes guys like that bitchy, naggy attitude.

high maintenance is just our polite way of saying ‘craaaaazzzzyyyyy’

And the prettier they are, the crazier they are

  3. As a guy, I can speak on this.

Dressing well is expensive. Make-up is expensive. Maintaining a certain lifestyle is expensive. For someone to “Maintain” these things (in addition to the added time to look that good everyday) … its safe to assume there is a high cost of maintenance. Hence, they are high-maintenance.

Any other questions that have been burning you?

Whats wrong with taking care of yoru appearance? all women should do that .. if they don’t ..I don’t see them as women … so in my opinion all women should be “high maintenance”. I wear make up to the supermarket and am always with perfectly ironed hair and wearing trendy clothes. I cannot stand looking anything less than perfect .. any woman can do that these days. It doesn’t cost much to look good.. the shops are full of well-priced beauty items and clothes most women can afford… it’s got nothing to do with money at all !
Call me superficial but I would not dream of going anywhere without my make-up and hair perfectly done and my husband loves me for that.. he says it makes him feel proud to show me off !

That’s crazy. If you don’t fix yourself up, you’re not noticeable or you don’t look good enough for them. When you take time to look good, you’re just too much. But then there’s nothing wrong with taking care of oneself because it’s where we get our confidence from. Can’t think too much on how other people think because we do it for ourselves. :)

  6. Dexie says:

whatever. first of all. Men wouldn’t be attracted to woman walking around in her freaking pajamas with unbrushed hair. Why do Men turn their heads to look at a magazines with Jessica Alba in the cover? coz she’s attractive, she’s sexy, and she groomed and glamoured from head to toe. if “regular” women like us who love looking stylish and made up are considered high-maintenance, well imagine how high Jessica Alba or other hot celebs are “maintained”.

Besides, Men, you ain’t Brad Pitt or George Clooney either. Maybe we’re “craaaaazzzy” because you’re all a bunch of gullible jerks. So get over yourselves!

    HAH! ;)

wouldn’t guys want to live in the looney bin cuz that’s where all the pretty women are. LOL. ;)

    No kidding… LOL.
