Work Out to Music

March 21, 2009 by Cherie Burbach

I’m on a big “fit kick” right now (the Spring weather will do that to a girl!) so it is with interest that I caught this article on the right and wrong ways to work out. For example, I LOVE reading while on the exercise bike or treadmill, but did you know you can burn 15 percent more calories if you listen to music instead?

1093834_fast_lane1Apparently the music keeps you on the right pace to get fit, while reading a book might distract you into working out at too low of an intensity. (And if you’re going to do it, you might as well get the benefits out of it, right?)

True for me. If I’m reading a book, my workout won’t be as intense as it could be, precisely because I’m distracted. (It happens with other things, too; if I’m reading while eating, odds are that my meal is going to end up cold before I’m done with it.)
