Work to Prevent Pet Theft

There are people in the world who would like to steal your cat or dog. That’s something you may not consider very often. Any breed is vulnerable — even your ordinary house cat.
Next Saturday, February 14 is Pet Theft Awareness Day.
Last Chance for Animals (LCA) has been working for years to help spread the word about pet theft, and their site StolenPets.com is a good place to learn more about prevention and recovery.
According to LCA, nearly two million pets are stolen each year.
Pets are stolen to be used in a variety of horrible ways:
• fur for clothing
• sacrifice by satanic cults
• research subjects in laboratories
• dog fighting
• meat for animal or human consumption
But LCA has some suggestions for you on ways to keep your pet safe. One preventative measure is to have your pet spayed or neutered. Altered pets are much less likely to roam from home in search of a mate.
Another protective measure suggested by LCA is to get your pet tattooed. Researchers in labs are required to search for registered tattoos. If one is found, they must contact the owner.
Pet owners should also be extremely cautious when placing “free to good home” ads.
