Would I Be a Better Alzheimer’s Caregiver?

Considering what I know now about Alzheimer’s and caregiving, I often wonder if I would be a better caregiver?  Would I understand better what Mother and Auntie were going through?  Would I have more patience?  Would I learn to take better care of myself so I wasn’t so tired?

I don’t have an answer, but I understand so much more about this disease and hopefully what caregivers and the Alzheimer’s patients are feeling.  I wasn’t a poor caregiver.  I did all I could for Mother and Auntie as I understood our situations several years ago.  But I’ve concluded that by learning all one can about this disease and caregiving, they can become better caregivers.

Looking back, I’m glad I did take time from my life to care for Mother and Auntie.  I developed a deeper love for these ladies midst the frustrations.  I better understand Alzheimer’s and its effect on victims, caregivers, and families.

Hopefully, from our journey (Mother’s, Auntie’s and mine) through this phase of our lives, I can help others to understand and cope.
