Yakult Probiotic Drink

Yakult Probiotic DrinkYakult is probably the most widely sold probiotic product in the world. It’s been around for more than 70 years now and even as a child I already knew those little bottles delivered to us by so-called Yakult ladies. Today, my son gets it daily from the kindergarten and it is a constant in our grocery list.

What makes Yakult healthy? Yakult UK summarizes the health benefits of Yakult:

The good gut flora helps to neutralise some of the toxic by-products of digestion, reduce harmful substances (such as toxins and carcinogens), and discourage harmful bacteria and yeasts from setting up home within the gut. In addition, the products of its growth help the cells of the gut grow and stay healthy.

Basically, what Yakult does it to introduce good microorganisms in your gut (Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain) which can displace the harmful ones. If you’re keeping tabs on your sugar consumption, there’s also the Light version, which only contains 3.6g sugar (instead of 11.2g).

Have you tried Yakult?

These types of drinks are very popular over here in Germany and often out on the breakfast table. I drink them less frequently than I should but the whole idea makes a lot of sense. Maybe drinking more good microorganisms should be on my resolution list this year. Thanks for reminding me!

I find this in my local Safeway. I do not think is difficult to find. I have been mixing it with a bananna and some fruit (blueberrys) in a shake. The sugar concerns me, but I just read there is a lite version.

  20. Lee says:

I have eczema for many years, it is red, itchy and dry. Is Yakult good or bad for eczema? will it cause my eczema to grow or become worse?

  21. bern.worx says:

Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (LcS), a member of the lactic acid bacteria, found in YAKULT was originally isolated from the human intestine from human feces at Yakult Central Institute for Microbiological Research (Tokyo, Japan).

  22. Sarah says:

GROSS about that comment above me. But I think what he’s referring to is the research done on mice:

    http://cdli.asm.org/cgi/content/full/8/3/593#MaterialsMethods
    Read: Materials and Method

I don’t think they gather human feces nowadays to make the healthy probiotic. They did something to it to harvest it and then they have a “mother strain”, so I’m guessing they’re basically reproducing the strain. And over years and years, I think it’s safe.

  23. jeff says:

the Yakult lite does it contain aspartame or sucralose? How much is lost in the stomach?

I grew up in Thailand and have been drinking Yakult since I was a child. I move to the U.S a couple year ago. I found all Thai grocery stores in Washington DC metro area have Yakult. Try Thai’s grocery store in your town.

  27. gaye says:

  28. I used to drink Yakult everyday in California, last year. I have horrible acid reflux problems with my stomach and as long as I drank Yakult everyday I did not have to take anything else to keep my stomach from giving me a bad time!! Now I am back in Springfield Ohio and cannot find it in any of the grocery stores I shop (or anywhere). PLEASE HELP!! I can I get that wonderful drink where I know live? Thank you!!

  29. Mariah says:

I’m 14 years old and just bought Yakult yesterday after seeing it on commercials and hearing great feedback. I believe it’s a healthy way to keep up your balances and produce healthy live bacteria in your intestine. You’ll have to get used to it’s taste; it’s a bit tart. But hey, if it works !

  30. Ania says:

Where can I find Yakult near Cleveland Ohio???

  31. JellyFishDude says:

The Store Locator does not work. I have Yakult at our local H-E-B stores, but it did not locate that.

  32. dann gonyea says:

after purcahsing several packs of Yakult I noticed the due “use by” date had expired – can they still be consumed and until when?

    • San Jose says:

You can drink it a month later and have no harm but you wont be getting the whole 8 Billion LIVE bacteria.

  33. NOTAFAN says:

I am not a huge fan of the product unless you want it for probiotics alone. I see the ingredient list is’nt too appealing – water + sugar + skim milk powder + glucose + Natural & Artificial Flavors + LACTOBACILLUS CASEI SHIROTA

I would do this instead which is HEALTHIER AND FRESHER – Yogurt (you can thin it with water) + proibotic capsule dumped in it. Does the job just fine and for fraction of cost.

  34. shonts says:

Where can I buy Yakult in South Delhi?

  35. charlyn says:

Is it okey for the pregnant women to drink yakult?

  36. Average Jane says:

I have not found one place to buy this!

I on Vancouver Island, BC and would try mail or online order if that was the only option available to me. I am very keen to try this for the possible allergy benefits.
