Year round school points
The pros and cons of year round school are hotly debated. Some people think it’s great, other people hate the idea.
However, the feedback on the commentary, Year-round school could solve boredom. brought up two points I hadn’t thought about, or, didn’t realize:
1. It would be difficult for teens to get summer jobs, and,
2. Under some plans, there’s no guarantee that children in the same family would have the same time off.
Just some thoughts, yet more things for parents, especially working parents to consider.
I’ve never had to deal with a year round school schedule, have any of you?

Around here, we have what I call a 3/4 year round school. The kids get extended (2 week) breaks in October, December, and March. That shortens the summer considerably, so that they are only out from June 22nd to Aug 15th. This is elementary school; I don’t think the high school is out that much.
We like it because we can take extended vacations during the off peak times. They have extended care at the school for before/after school that goes up in price during breaks/summer.
personally I think that year round school is ridiculose. the kids need to have a break at some time. Doesn’t anybody remeber back when we were kids and how we loved our summer break? Really think about it, would you want to go to school during your summer? I think not.
No…
–No change in test scores
–summer is a motivation/reward for the hardwork kids undergo
–more time for family vacation
–students will forget if it is 8 or 10 weeks
– students get to enjoy activities done in the summer
–overcrowding
–schools would require more a.c. which would cost more money
–summer businesses suffer
Schools in Jefferson County, Colorado abandoned the year-round calendar in 1989 after 13 years of year-round operation in approximately 50 district schools. Despite community protests, half of the district’s schools went year-round beginning in 1974 to relieve overcrowding. The district reports no educational improvement or increased test scores. In fact, the decline in test scores in one high school led to decision to return to the traditional calendar. The community passed a $93 million school construction bond six years ago to get rid of year-round school. When the year-round issue threatened again in 1992, the community soundly defeated it, based on past experience. (Jefferson County School District information, 1991)
After operating year-round schools for nine years, Prince William County, Virginia returned to a traditional calendar, basing their decision on little academic improvement, few cost benefits and parent reaction. According to Dr. Mary Weybright, supervisor of programs and planning, “There were not enough advantages to outweigh the disadvantages
Houston abandoned its first experiment with year-round schools after eight years, concluding the program was extremely expensive, it failed to relieve overcrowding and student achievement did not increase. School officials planned to save $6.9 million by eliminating funding necessary for the program.
In 1972, Romeoville, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, implemented a multi-track program in 16 schools to relieve overcrowding. According to John Lukancic, assistant superintendent of Valley View schools, they abandoned the schedule after eight years because of high operational costs of air conditioning and maintenance, difficulty in filling year-round administrative positions, and scheduling problems at the high school level.
I don’t know what kind of year-round schools you guys have over there, but the year-round schools here in LA are great. Each track gets two vacations each year. As for me, an A tracker, I get my vacations from around Dec. 22 to Mar. 4 and around June 29 to August 30. It’s way better than having to go to school the WHOLE year, and only getting summer off. It doesn’t really matter around here if you have school in the summer, as long as you have your two seasons of vacations.
hahahahhahaha
