You don’t have to be older to have osteoporosis

If you mention “osteoporosis” or “brittle bone disease,” most likely the image of an older person – especially a woman – comes to mind. However, as the woman in this article, Doctors said I was too young to have brittle bones — until I broke my back picking up my baby, learned – there is no age limit for osteoporosis.

Because of her age, the doctors wouldn’t consider the possibility of osteoporosis, even though her mother had it. But, it’s not as unusual as people may think. According to the article, “A study carried out last year by the University of Surrey and the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro found that 20 per cent of women aged 20 to 29 had osteopenia (low bone mass) which, unchecked, could lead to early onset osteoporosis. (Osteoporosis usually appears in women in their late 50s and older.)”

So, if you have a history of osteoporosis in your family and if you have any of the risk factors, consider the possibility if you break bones a little too easily for your liking.
