You Will Improve at This

Something I’ve noticed about writing in a journal; you improve at it the more you write. Over time, not just my writing improves, but my ability to locate the problem, to define what it is that matters. I can sit and immediately tap into the flow of thoughts streaming through my mind.
I didn’t always find this easy. Most journal writing sessions began with wondering what I would write about. I’d usually observe where I was as a way to ground me in my thoughts. It would locate me in that moment in time. I was happy to fill a page. Now I really have to force myself to stop writing.
It’s only through the practice of sitting, writing, thinking, pondering, allowing myself to let go of whatever is troubling me, open myself to those thoughts, and simply let my hand move across the page, that I can do this.
This entry is a reminder. You will get more out of writing in your journal the more you do so. Please leave any comments in the section below.

In the book Journal to the Self by Kathleen Adams she suggests that there is a point where journal writing, personal writing, goes from just enough to too much. What is you opinion on this when does enough become too much? Is there such a point? For me the mere sugestion also sugests there is a right way and a wrong way to journal.
Hi Laura,
What a great question. I think I will have a little think about this, as I was going to answer, but it got longer and longer. I will respond tonight and blog about my answer. I hope that’s ok with you. Thanks for asking such a great question.
I have a question too on this. What about nagging about the same problem or issus in your life in the journal and never finding a solution? I tend to come back to some problems… hm, I don’t think I have a question. I just realized by writing this that I do GET the answer by writing, I’m just not DOING the changes I know I need! guess journaling can’t help then huh? ;-(
Hi Hanna,
Thanks for leaving your comment, which started out as a question. Your input is always fantastic. I really appreciate that you made that discovery writing your comment here.
