Learning to read and write early on promotes strong self esteem and independence. When I taught 1st grade, those children who hadn’t a clue were always frustrated that they couldn’t read directions, pick out their own stories, etc… I would be thrilled to win!

I work on reading and writing with my daughter who will be starting kindergarten because I enjoy watching her learn new things and knowing that I’m able to show her and teach her is very rewarding. I think all children benefit from this attention I know my daughter will be starting kindergarten with a confidence about her reading and writing abilities and I think that she’ll grow even more! Now I have my son to start working with! Thanks for the entry :)

I think it’s so important! I remember reading about a study several years back that a child’s intelligence and reading skills ran parallel to the amount of books available in the home. I use that as my excuse to keep bringing home books for us all to read! ;)

  27. Tom says:

I think reading with children is important for several reasons. It helps develop their cognitive abilities, helps develop their language skills and it is just good, old fashion time spent together. It helps develop a rapport with your kids from an early age and gives you an activity in common. Reading to and with your kids is a very important family activity on many levels.

Reading and writing at an early age helps children develop in other areas as well. Plus the reading itself opens up their minds to new ideas, and writing helps them express themselves.

I am an avid reader and, as a new mom, I want to pass that love of reading down on to my son. I was a good student and I strongly believe that it is because I could read at an early age. I want to give my son every advantage to start him on the right path academically.
