Your Best Friend

Best Friends

While you were growing up, or very young, I’m sure you had someone who was a special friend, your best friend. I know I had one. I remember her full name and when her birthday was, but sadly we are no longer in contact. I have no idea what happened to my friend, although we were firm friends all through primary school. When I started high school she was overseas with her family. I moved to another state not long afterwards and for some reason we didn’t exchange addresses. That was it. I still think about her and the things we used to talk about, our dreams, etc. I can’t help wondering what she’s doing with herself after all this time.

Spend some time writing about your best friend/s from primary school or earlier. Do you still have contact with this person (people)? If so, what place do they hold in your life; still best friends or only acquaintances? Write about the things you used to do together. Write about some of the dreams you shared with each other. If you like, use images to help go back to that time, to help jog your memory. Either scan old photos or use the internet for help on what was happening at the time. Do you think you could find this person (people) if you wanted to? How would you feel to speak with them again? Was there anything left unresolved between the two of you? Would you want to meet up with them again?

I hope you enjoy this journal writing prompt. Please leave any comments in the section below.

  1. I really enjoyed this post. It got me thinking about long lost friends I had from way back when who meant the world to me. I’ve found through social networks like Facebook and Myspace I’ve been able to reconnect with quite a few of them. After reading your post I went through my storage unit and pulled out pictures from my adolescences’, high school and college years. What amazing times! Thanks for helping me take this trip through memory lane.

  2. Hi Jessica,
I’m so glad you got a lot out of this one. I think the internet is making it a lot easier for people to find each other, especially after a long time. Thanks for leaving a comment. ;-)

  3. An excellent prompt, and so universal, too. Just about all of us have a “lost” one–or five–to remember and appreciate.

  4. Hi Jody,
I’m glad this one has struck a nerve for you, too. One thing we all had growing was just that one special person, at least. I hope you get a lot out of writing this one in your journal, too. Thanks so much for your comment. ;-)
