Zoos Face Closure

Zoos provide affordable local entertainment and educational opportunities at all times, but especially during a recession when many families are canceling vacations. Sadly, some animals may be losing their homes if things don’t turn around in Boston. Local families would also lose a favorite destination.

We seldom think of zoos running out of money, but it’s happening to Franklin Park Zoo, open since 1913 in Boston, as well as Stone Zoo in Stoneham. Zoo officials have said that they will run out of money within a few months. The zoos face an uncertain future due to state funding cuts.

If the zoos close, more than 1,000 animals would need new homes. According to a recent article from The Boston Globe, zoo officials believe that it’s unlikely they’d be able to find new homes for around 20% of the animals. If new homes aren’t found, some of the animals could be destroyed.

Zoo officials are urging legislative leaders to restore funding to save the zoos. Visit Zoo New England to learn more about supporting the zoos.

  1. That is so sad! Both for the history of the zoo, the loss the city will feel and the poor animals that will most likely be destroyed!
