Not Helping: Study Says Deploying New Moms Into Combat Increases Maternal Depression Risk

Not Helping: Study Says Deploying New Moms Into Combat Increases Maternal Depression Risk

Dear Journal of Women’s Health,

A study in your current issue asks “Is Military Deployment a Risk Factor for Maternal Depression?” Scientific journals are constantly publishing studies that basically just quantify obvious social and physical observations; you can’t be blamed for doing the same (though I’m still mystified by where they get the funding, or why you bother allowing them to publish). But I disappointed that you, of all places, are publishing a blatantly sexist study undermining the ability of women to serve in the military, and women in combat. Who is this helping? More »

Patrick Wilson’s Wife Just Ended The Dumb Debate Over Whether He Would Screw Lena Dunham IRL

Patrick Wilson's Wife Just Ended The Dumb Debate Over Whether He Would Screw Lena Dunham IRL

A few episodes into season two of Girls, most of us have gotten used to seeing Lena Dunham naked. We’ve even managed to stop discussing the size of her thighs and whether or not she’s obese. (Ok, everyone but Howard Stern, but what else would you expect?) But then she went and had TV sex with Patrick Wilson, and the internet collectively regressed to rating Lena Dunham’s looks on a scale of “Patrick Wilson would never screw her IRL” to “Patrick Wilson would screw her IRL.” She’s “not conventionally attractive,” people keenly observe, and Wilson is. So there’s no way that they could ever have sex in real life! And how can we even watch TV that isn’t realistic?! More »

Heart Attack Grill Spokesman John Alleman Died Of A Heart Attack

Heart Attack Grill Spokesman John Alleman Died Of A Heart Attack

John Alleman, the unofficial spokesman for the Heart Attack Grill, died of a heart attack yesterday. If you’re not familiar, the Las Vegas restaurant’s whole schtick is serving horrendously unhealthy food–like the “quadruple bypass burger,” which contains nearly 10,000 calories alone–with a staff dressed up as nurses and doctors. Because who wouldn’t want to visualize a trip to the E.R. while consuming food that’s literally closing their arteries?! More »

Diet Coke Increases Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes (Yes, Even Though It’s Sugar-Free)

Diet Coke Increases Risk Of Type 2 Diabetes (Yes, Even Though It's Sugar-Free)

French researchers have found yet another reason to stop drinking Diet Coke: It’s linked to a higher risk of Type 2 Diabetes; in fact, they even found that diet soda drinkers were more likely to develop diabetes than subjects who drank regular soda. This is hardly the first study reminding people that diet sodas are terrible for you, despite being calorie-free, and yet…consumers don’t seem to care nearly as much about the health risks of what they drink as they do about whether it will make them fat. A Healthy King Cake Recipe For Mardi Gras Doesn’t Exist. Nor Should It.

A Healthy King Cake Recipe For Mardi Gras Doesn't Exist. Nor Should It.

Bad news: There’s no such thing as a healthy King Cake recipe for Mardi Gras. Vegan King Cake recipes are easy to find, and I even found a blogger who’s mastered a gluten-free King Cake. You can eat your cake and have your dietary restrictions, too, but you just can’t have a cake–or celebrate FAT TUESDAY–with a dessert that’s anything but a totally gluttonous, bad-for-you blend of sugar, fat and food coloring. Mountain Dew Is Making A New ‘Breakfast Drink’…That Sounds A Lot Like An Energy Drink For Kids

Mountain Dew Is Making A New 'Breakfast Drink'...That Sounds A Lot Like An Energy Drink For Kids

Because it isn’t already loaded with enough sugar and caffeine to last you 24 hours, Mountain Dew is gearing up to claim their stake in the energy drink market with “Kickstart,” a caffeine- and juice-infused beverage set to come out later this month. The company says their so-called “breakfast drink” won’t contain nearly the amount of caffeine found in controversial brands like Monster energy drink or even Red Bull, but it’s not necessarily the caffeine content that disturbs us: It’s the fact that this sounds suspiciously like a drink designed to be sold to kids. FDA Postpones Approval Of Novo Nordisk Diabetes Drugs; Reports Focus On Stocks, Not Health

FDA Postpones Approval Of Novo Nordisk Diabetes Drugs; Reports Focus On Stocks, Not Health

Novo Nordisk is the star of today’s health news right now, because the Food and Drug Administration didn’t approve two of their new diabetes drugs as expected. But practically all headlines and articles are focused on one thing: What this means for the value of Novo Nordisk shares. Am I crazy, or should the failure a massive diabetes drug manufacturer to properly test prescription drugs before putting them on the market be of concern to a wider audience than shareholders? Girl Scout Cookies Calories and Nutrition Facts: Do You Care?

Girl Scout Cookies Calories and Nutrition Facts: Do You Care?

Today is the first annual celebration of National Girl Scout Cookie Day, which the scouts are instating to celebrate the “world’s largest girl-led business,” and of course, “to make it easy for you to buy or order cookies.” But alongside the impending crush of Thin Mints, Samoas, and Do-Si-Dos, a new “healthy” variety–made with vitamin-enfused fruit concentrate–is coming to reassure you that not all Girl Scout Cookies calories are empty. First Crystal Renn Had To Defend Her Weight Loss. Now, She Has To Defend The Work She Gets

First Crystal Renn Had To Defend Her Weight Loss. Now, She Has To Defend The Work She Gets

As a plus-sized model who used to suffer an eating disorder, Crystal Renn has had to defend her recent weight loss on several occasions. Now, instead of being asked to straight up explain why her weight is changing (you know, because that NEVER happens to most women), she’s being asked to defend the kind of work she’s getting now that she’s lost a few sizes. At a recent amfAR gala, she wasted precious time answering the New York Post‘s questions about whether she would have gotten her recent gig in an Agent Provocateur ad campaign if she hadn’t lost weight and gone down to a size 8. 80% Of Antiobiotics Are Now Used For Livestock; Here’s Why You Should Be Scared

80% Of Antiobiotics Are Now Used For Livestock; Here's Why You Should Be Scared

With the discovery of antibiotic resistance, “superbugs,” and the knowledge that antibiotics can cause serious health complications (to the extent that you could need a fecal transplant to live), people are slowly becoming wary of taking antibiotics to treat everyday illnesses and minor infections. But it turns out that if we’re really concerned about antibiotic resistance and the over-prescription of drugs, we should be looking at our food, not our doctors: According to Mother Jones, the meat industry now uses a scary 80% of all antiobiotics in the U.S. More »

The 2013 Grammys Dress Code: No Female Breasts Or Organized Causes

The 2013 Grammys Dress Code: No Female Breasts Or Organized Causes

Awards season has long usurped bikini season for least family-friendly celebrity photo buzz, but CBS isn’t having it this year: In advance of the 2013 Grammys Award show, they issued an official dress code instructing performers and attendees to keep themselves covered up–especially if they’re female, or have a social cause they’d like to promote. It’s their party, so they can censor however they want to…but coming from an awards show that allowed Chris Brown to perform (and accept awards on stage in a chest-revealing outfit) on the three-year anniversary of assaulting Rihanna, it’s kind of hard to stomach. Rex Reed Hated Identity Thief…Especially Because Melissa McCarthy Is Fat

Rex Reed Hated Identity Thief...Especially Because Melissa McCarthy Is Fat

The New York Observer‘s Rex Reed is a famous film critic who’s been involved in the industry for decades. And in his review of the new film Identity Thief, he proved that years of experience have granted him the supreme talent of fat-shaming. He creatively called Melissa McCarthy, the talented actress and comedian who’s been recognized for her brilliant work on film and television, “tractor-sized,” a “hippo,” and “a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success,” simultaneously wondering how her “charming, talented, attractive and versatile” co-star, Jason Bateman, got “stuck in so much dreck”–encouraging young writers to remember that if they just put in enough time at their craft, they too could be allowed to publicly bully successful adults with ad hominem attacks. Chris Christie Weight Criticism, Fat Jokes Aren’t A Sign Of Gender Equality In Politics

Chris Christie Weight Criticism, Fat Jokes Aren't A Sign Of Gender Equality In Politics

Earlier this week, Chris Christie went on “The Late Show with David Letterman” and joked about his weight, calling himself “basically the healthiest fat guy you’ve ever seen in your life.” And this morning, he held a news conference in New Jersey to clarify that he takes the issue seriously. Most pundits are translating the public discussion of his health as a sign that he’s gearing up to run for office in 2016, but others are also discussing what it means for the media to scrutinize a man’s appearance in politics; a treat that’s long been reserved for female politicians.
