A Breakthrough in SIDS

For years everyone has wondered what it was that caused babies to die so suddenly, doctors may have found a bacteria that may be linked to “Sudden Infant Death,” SIDS. Doctors have discovered two types of bacteria in the babies that have died, these are Staphylococcus aureus and E.coli. While finding these two deadly bacteria are dangerous this is only their first step to finding out without a doubt if this is what causes the SIDS Death.
Dr. Nigel Kleine, a professor at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children:
“We don’t know whether it’s a cause or if it’s identifying another potential risk factor.”
The good thing is at least they are that much closer to discovering the mystery of such a sad and ongoing situation. For those wondering they found this by doing autopsies on the babies that have passed away, not on living babies.
“The researchers used autopsy samples from 470 infants who died suddenly and unexpectedly between 1996 and 2005. They found dangerous bacteria in 181 babies, or nearly half of the 365 whose deaths were unexplained. There were similar bacteria in about a quarter (14 of 53) of the babies who died of known causes, excluding those who died of bacterial infections.”

i saw this on FOX news and am very glad that they are really researching some of these issues. SIDS is so terrible and an acquaintence of mine lost her 4 mo old son a few months ago due to SIDS.
