A “Doktorkopf” Thing to Do

Today, is our sixth wedding anniversary and I am home all alone.

My husband, children and visiting cousin-babysitter are spending Saturday at
.

The Ikea in our area has a giant slide that goes from the café to the warehouse. And, to make up for not taking him to the place with the yellow trademark whose french fries are probably more harmful than letting the kids have a double-scotch somewhere he wanted to go, my husband promised to take him to play among the healthy Swedish pine. On a Saturday afternoon. Without discussing it with me.

But, a promise is a promise and he has to follow through.

Luckily, I do not, so I made him take the baby too.

Don’t get me wrong. I have been to Ikea and enjoyed it. I have also been there on a weekend and spent more than four hours trying to get from office furniture to kiddyland on foot. I need not do that again. In cases like these, I now have a special phrase I use to describe my husband’s idea-behaviour combo. It is a phrase my 4 year-old son made up. He came home from kindergarten with tales of the little boy insults Blüdman (dummy) and Blüdkopf (dummy head) that he thought were just hilarious. <7p>

Concerned that our son didn’t understand that he was being insulted in German, my husband started teaching him insults. Insults that were far too strong for Kindergarten. I tried Dumbkopf (stupid head), but little boy decided it wasn’t funny enough and came up with Doktorkopf. As far as I know he and his little friends have been calling each other doctor heads for a few weeks now.

A friend has since defined Doktorkopf as “a smart man who does stupid things.”

Usage: Going to Ikea for a relaxing weekend outing! What Doktorkopf came up with that idea? You can count me out…but you can take the baby too.

    Wenda,
It’s a struggle, but I win on occasion.

  1. [...] I know I am a bit late coming to the High Five phenomenon, but living in Germany I tend to be a bit cut off from new English language publications. Our family sat down to read the magazine together on Sunday. My four year-old was serious about each article, especially through the adventures of Harry’s hat and Tiana and her mama’s bilingual trip to the pet shop. [...]
