A Memory

I had a horrible memory of when I was university today. I was on my way to work and the phrase “I’ll sleep when I am dead,” came to me. I said that about 15 years ago when life demanded that I balance writing university papers with work and parties. Remembering I once felt that way made me feel a little sick.
These days, the phrase, “if I don’t sleep, I’ll die,” describes my current state (knock wood). I hate that younger version of myself. The one who thought she had everything under control. The one who thought sleeplessness, somehow, enhanced her creativity. The one who had no children and thought sleep was recreational.

Will I survive teething? How long can a woman go with so little sleep for so long? Why do babies cry so much louder, so much more inconsolably, at 3 a.m.? Why do teething gels and soothing homeopathic remedies from Europe work for about 15 minutes? [...]

Sex was once a lovely distraction from work-stress which no longer even enters my stress radar. In fact, I now leave home to experience work-stress every day because it is so much more relaxing than housewife and stay at home mother stress. And, as for being tired! I had no idea what tiredness was before I became a parent. [...]
