Yesterday, I was glad it rained. Not a common vacation pleasure, but we needed it.
It gave us a day off from the abandoned garden behind my husband’s family’s little village house. No one has lived in the house for almost two years, since my father-in-law died, except for a few nights that my son and I spent there last summer. Last July, I threw out about ten cart-fulls of garbage that had accumulated over the last three generations or so.
This year, clearing the garden is the big chore. We aren’t talking about a few weeds. We’re talking about an big patch of land that wants to revert to bush. I can now appreciate the kanga from a purely practical perspective. It’s hard to do agricultural work while making sure the kids are safe. How do farming women manage?
That said, my muscles ache like never before. Must be the exercise of hard manual labour. I can’t help but wonder if I haven’t lost a little weight in the past week that we’ve been in Bulgaria…
