Barbra Streisand Never Had a Doll

Wow, I never thought I’d feel so bad for someone. I know many of you probably never even thought about what it would be like to not have some things that you have around you. For Barbra Steisand those every day items little girls had around them weren’t always in her house. She recently told CBS’s Early Show that she actually didn’t have a doll growing up. (I’m so sad)
“We never had a couch. We never had a living room. We only had a dining room and then my grandmother and grandfather lived in one bedroom. My mother, my brother and I slept in another bedroom … Now, I love couches. You know, I never had a doll – I had a hot water bottle.”
Growing up I always had a ton of dolls to choose from when it came time to play, many of which had special meaning. Some dolls were there to look pretty, I collected others, played with more and then there were those I told my deep secrets to or even cried into. As a young child, I remember carrying around this one that was all furry and had a munchkin like face and fingers. I took that doll everywhere, I can’t tell you where it is now but I remember she had dirt all over it and very raggedy near the end of my memories of her.
I had Natalie, a dark haired Cabbage Patch Doll that I got during a very scary and messy divorce. The doll was the one thing my grandparents (Nanny & Papa) took me to get and she would continue to live with me ever since.
How many of you remember a favorite doll? If you don’t remember one from your own childhood, do you remember one you’ve given your own child?

Funny my mom and I were just telling my daughter about a doll I got for Christmas as a little girl. Had to be 1976 (I was 5) and I remember seeing a glimpse of a doll in a store window, but never told anyone about it, or that I wanted her. She showed up under the tree, and I named her Cindy (turns out that was the name she already had on the box, but I didn’t know). My mom swears to this day she did not put that doll under the tree, and no one else could have, her being a single mom and all. Cindy had a soft pink with white polkadot body and a pull cord that I broke a few weeks later. She was all dirty and patched up after the years, but I have no idea what happened to her. I would love to find another like her for my daughter today!
I remember picking out a porcelain doll for a birthday present one year. My mom kept it in its box in her closet until the big day, but I would sneak it out and hold it in secret. I loved that doll!
