Charity Campaign Spotlight: Society for Women’s Health Research

Babylune’s Mothering Sunday to Mothers’ Day Charity Campaign started on March 18th and runs until May 13. This is the third of a three-part series of posts highlighting the three charities selected for the campaign. The charity with the most votes as chosen by readers voting in the poll, will recieve $1 for every 1000 page views served up during the campaign.

Once upon a time, as little as 15 years ago, women were generally excluded from new drug trials. Researchers worried that monthly hormonal cycles would “throw off” their understanding of how drugs worked in the body. The fact that women would have to take these drugs after they came to market went largely unconsidered.

The Society for Women’s Health Research was founded in 1990 to make change.

It now works on a number of issues to force politicians, regulatory bodies, and pharmaceutical companies to consider women’s health and to address our unique medical concerns including the different ways that men and women metabolize alcohol and cigarette smoke.

Sex-based biology is a new field and one that needs financial support to ensure that women and girls aren’t left out of the better health equation.

In a society where women’s health reporting is often found only in the entertainment section of most newspapers, the Society for Women’s Health Research is putting a sense of urgency back into the value of health and the value of women’s lives everywhere.
