Getting Arrested for Breastfeeding

I remember when my third child was born, I was sitting in a Burger King with my older two children across from me. My husband was deployed in Iraq at the time and my little girl was about 3 weeks old, she was hungry and needed to eat. I figured it was perfectly safe and the right place to eat, I was already holding her in my lap like many moms hold their youngesters. I lifted my shirt just slightly, placed my blanket over my shoulder and around her giving both of us some privacy and not making it obvious what was going on. No one said anything, not the officer across from me, the older couple two tables down, or anyone that worked inside.

It was my son that looked freaked out, he was only 6 years old, “Mom, you’re going to get arrested.”

I was shocked, “What? What for?” I was confused, I’d done nothing wrong and for some reason he was scared out of his mind.

He pointed at me, “That,” he replied as if I should already know.

I looked down, “What? I don’t see anything.”

“Her. You are feeding her like that.”

As I stated before, we were both completely covered, no skin was showing. But some how my son thought that breastfeeding even covered was against the law. So as I stated in the 50 Things I wish I knew about Breastfeeding, even some will freak out or think it is against the law.

(Yes I did explain to him it was okay and he’s since got use to it)
